RMC Receives Advanced Certification as a Primary Stroke Center

The Joint Commission National Quality and Approval seal

The Regional Medical Center (RMC) has been recertified as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission. After completing a rigorous on-site review, RMC received the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for demonstrating compliance with national, evidence-based standards for stroke care.

By achieving advanced certification as a Primary Stroke Center, RMC has proven its ability to provide effective, timely care to stroke victims and significantly improve their outcomes. “We are pleased to be recognized for excellence in stroke care, particularly given the high incidence of stroke in our area,” said RMC President and CEO Charles E. Williams. According to DHEC, Orangeburg County has the second highest rate of stroke mortality in South Carolina. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the state and a leading cause of adult disability.

The Joint Commission’s Primary Stroke Center Certification program is based on recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition in collaboration with the American Stroke Association in 2003. Certification is only available to stroke programs in Joint Commission-accredited acute care hospitals.

RMC’s commitment to providing patients with the highest quality stroke care goes beyond adhering to Primary Stroke Center requirements. RMC is affiliated with the Medical University of South Carolina’s telestroke program, which provides urgent stroke evaluations and consultations 24 hours a day, seven days a week. RMC’s Emergency Department has also established a “stroke pathways” treatment plan to guide patients through radiological studies and clinical evaluations as quickly as possible.
