RMC Home Care Expands Services to Bamberg County

The Regional Medical Center (RMC) Vice President of Strategy and Compliance Brenda Williams, MHA, FACHE announces that the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has awarded RMC Home Care a Certificate of Need (CON) to provide home healthcare services in Bamberg County.

“RMC has provided home care in Orangeburg and Calhoun counties since 1997. The inclusion of Bamberg County into our home health service area will provide access to Bamberg County patients who cannot leave their homes and add to the services RMC offers in the area,” said Williams, “Most patients feel more comfortable recovering at home, and they often take a more direct role in their care as a result.”

Home healthcare is usually prescribed to patients who are recovering from illness or surgery and are able to go home but require continued healthcare once released from the hospital. Home healthcare can offer individualized attention and an institutional level of care in a home environment.

RMC’s Home Care program offers a wide range of in-home nursing services to individuals and their families such as nursing care and home health aide services. RMC Home Care services also include certified wound nursing care for difficult healing wounds; and physical, occupational and speech therapies. Medical social services help home care patients with securing resources for families, provide assistance with lifestyle changes created by illness and provide support for the family as a unit.

The newest service offered by RMC Home Care is in-home behavioral healthcare. Home health patients can now be assessed and receive treatments in the comfort of their home by a behavioral health-trained specialist.

“Behavioral health in-home visits will help home healthcare patients tremendously. Being homebound can lead to depression, anxiety, and also keep patients from accessing the mental healthcare they need,” said Richard Bjarnesen, RN and director of home care and program manager of RMC’s inpatient Behavioral Health Center, “Behavioral health in-home care isn’t seen very often and is unique to RMC in the tri-county area.”

RMC Home Care is a state-licensed Medicare and Medicaid certified, Joint Commission accredited, hospital-based agency. Most costs for services are paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, Workers’ Compensation, Veterans Administration insurance or private insurance. Patients may pay directly for services, or may be eligible for financial assistance.

The RMC healthcare system includes a 286-bed, acute-care hospital and 21 primary care and specialty care practices. RMC offers an urgent care center in Bamberg, as well as primary care offices in Bamberg and Denmark. RMC is affiliated with MUSC Health, the largest academic medical center in South Carolina, to further enhance select healthcare services for patients in the region.
