RMC Foundation
History and Background
The Regional Medical Center Foundation is the philanthropic umbrella for RMC and funds hospital-sponsored community programs to help improve the quality of life for area residents. The Foundation is an independent, nonprofit charitable foundation governed by a volunteer board of directors made up of local community leaders. Started in 1986 by community leaders, employees and volunteers, The the Foundation encourages philanthropic contributions that are used to improve the health and quality of life of our community through prevention programs, health education and outreach.
The mission of RMC Foundation is to act as a catalyst in promoting The the Regional Medical Center through charitable gifts, education and positive public relations. Contributions to RMC Foundation are used locally to help friends and neighbors. The Foundation, with oversight from the board of directors, is operated by four full-time staff members and an active roster of community volunteers.
Programs supported by RMC Foundation
The H. Filmore Mabry Center For Cancer Care Fund: Gifts to this fund provide necessary medications and supplies to indigent cancer patients and allow us to provide community outreach through educational events and support groups.
Diabetes Fund: This fund supports an outpatient program for diabetics and people at risk for diabetes. The outpatient program serves as a community outreach and education program to help local people with diabetes and to identify new diabetics in order to ensure proper treatment of the disease. RMC's Outpatient Diabetes Self-Management Program is one of only nine programs in South Carolina accredited by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Hospice: Hospice of RMC is a community-based program that assists terminally ill patients and their loved ones by providing medical care, counseling and caring support. In addition to the family-centered program which provides services to empower the terminally ill to spend their final days in comfort and with dignity, Hospice of RMC offers community grief support programs, children’s grief support programs, support programs for widows and widowers, and an annual community candlelight ceremony as well as special holiday programs.
Chaplain's Crisis Fund: The program provides one-time assistance to families in severe financial difficulty.
School Nurse Program: This program helps place nurses in schools throughout Orangeburg and Calhoun counties. School nurses in the program dispense medicine and communicate with children, parents and staff as needed to ensure proper care of each child in school. In addition, school nurses are responsible for well-child screenings, immunizations, healthcare-related referrals, and wellness programs for community and school staff.
Women’s and Children’s Fund: This fund helps support services provided for women and children. Specific areas of interest include RMC’s obstetrics and pediatrics units.
O·B·C Safe Kids Coalition: A nationally award-winning program, O·B·C Safe Kids Coalition is affiliated with the National Safe Kids Campaign and aims to prevent unintentional injuries among children ages birth to 14 years. The local coalition offers community outreach and education in Orangeburg, Bamberg and Calhoun counties.
Camp Catch-A-Breath: This one-week camp helps local children with asthma to better understand and control their disease. Camp participants are taught to recognize the signs of an asthma attack, what to do if an attack occurs and how to prevent attacks.
Virginia B. Johnson Scholarship Fund: This scholarship was established in honor of community leader and volunteer Virginia B. Johnson. It is awarded to selected persons from the surrounding area whom are accepted into accredited nursing programs.
RMC Foundation: Unrestricted gifts to RMC Foundation enable the Foundation to respond to the most critical needs of the community and allow for growth of the Foundation to better serve the people of Orangeburg and Calhoun counties.
