RMC Receives National Thomson Reuters Healthcare Advantage Award
ORANGEBURG, SC—The Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg & Calhoun Counties recently received a national Thomson Reuters Healthcare Advantage Award for clinical performance and significantly improving the quality of healthcare delivered to patients. The award was presented in Orlando at the 2010 Healthcare Advantage Conference, the annual gathering of Thomson Reuters healthcare customers.

“It's commendable how our Quality Department and Hospitalist team pursues excellence for patient care with such passion,” commented RMC President & CEO Tom Dandridge. “We are humbled by this national recognition, however; we are most proud that the entire RMC family gives our very best every day for those we serve. Physicians and other healthcare staff working together toward a common goal provides the kind of results that make a huge difference for our patients,” he said, “and that’s what it’s all about!”

RMC was honored for significant improvements in multiple national clinical benchmarks. In 2008-2009, utilizing the Hospitalist Program at RMC, numerous clinical initiatives were implemented by the RMC Quality Department and Hospitalists to improve patient safety and outcomes.

These efforts resulted in a decrease in patient mortality rate that was 38 percent better than the national average. In addition, patients spent 20 percent less time in the hospital, and “perfect care” delivered as defined by national core measures for the treatment of pneumonia and congestive heart failure improved by 22 percent.

We are extremely proud to win a national award of this magnitude,” commented Brian Kendall, M.D., Director of Hospitalist Services at RMC. “I am proud of the outstanding work of RMC’s Quality Department, Hospitalist Department and all of the hospital services that have participated in our efforts to improve patient care at RMC.”

“It is very significant for our community to know that if they or their loved one is extremely ill and cared for by RMC’s hospitalists, they have a 38 percent better chance of surviving their illness compared to the national average,” Kendall said. “Our hospitalists are from some of the finest medical residencies in the country – this award is testimony to their clinical excellence, and our community should have tremendous confidence in their skills and in RMC.”
