A graduate of Lake Marion High School, Doctor will enter the University of South Carolina Upstate this fall, where she will pursue a degree in nursing. She has aspirations to become a pediatric nurse. While in high school she served many roles in a variety of clubs and organizations including the National Honor Society, Student Government, National Technical Honor Society, Beta Club, University of AP and Honors Academy, and the Emeralds of Distinction Organization.

“I am very grateful for this opportunity. This program has opened doors and shown me the endless possibilities available in healthcare,” noted Doctor. “I am honored to have been allowed the privilege to follow some of the best nurses, and this has helped me decide which specialty in nursing to pursue. With this scholarship I intend to pursue my degree in nursing and hope to come back to my community.”

Also a graduate of Lake Marion High School, where she was first in her class of 191 students, Woods will enter the University of South Carolina this fall. She plans to pursue a degree in chemistry and has aspirations to become a general surgeon or an orthopaedic surgeon. While in high school she was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government, National Technical Honor Society, Beta Club, University of AP and Honors Academy, and the Emeralds of Distinction Organization.

“During the Summer Enrichment Program, I truly learned a lot. From being with Dr. Hill to just sitting at the desk on Fourth West near Charlene, the secretary, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge,” Woods said. “I am proud that I was given the opportunity because now I have a true idea about what I want to do with my life. Without this program I believe I would have gone into medicine for the wrong reasons; however, since I have been with Dr. Hill and witnessed the joy he receives from being with his patients, I know that is what I want out of life, as well. I am very thankful for the Myers Scholarship and cannot thank the Auxiliary, the RMC staff and Dr. Hill enough for this experience.”

In the spring of 1995, RMC Auxiliary established the H. Filmore Mabry Scholarship Endowment to honor Mabry’s distinguished service to the healthcare profession and to be used to support some deserving area students in high demand health disciplines. Mabry served 32 years as RMC’s chief executive officer prior to retiring in December 1993; he passed away March 7, 1995.

In 2008 RMC Auxiliary established a scholarship in memory of Dr. Irene Myers to support and enhance the RMC scholarship that benefits the Regional Medical Center’s Summer Enrichment Program students. The scholarship recognizes Dr. Myers’ 45 years of distinguished service in public education and her passion for the opportunities the Summer Enrichment Program provides local students who are interested in healthcare professions. Dr. Myers joined the RMC Auxiliary in February 2000 and served as president from 2006 until her death in February 2008.

“We would not be able to offer the Summer Enrichment Program without the generosity of the Auxiliary. We are very much indebted to them for their contribution to the young people in the community through their sponsorship of this program,” noted Betty Barber, SEP Advisor, who is Executive Assistant to RMC’s President and CEO. The Mabry Scholarship has awarded many students the opportunity to pursue a career in healthcare, and the addition of the Myers Scholarship last year has strongly enhanced this special mission.”
