Managing Your Pain
PATIENT RIGHTS FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT
You have the right to pain relief. Before we can help you control your pain, your doctor or nurse needs to know the following information:
Where is pain located?
When did it first start?
**Whether the pain is all the time or just sometimes.
On a number scale, how bad is your pain or which face best describes your pain.
**You should ask for relief when pain first begins.
**Tell your doctor or nurse if your pain is not controlled.
YOUR COMFORT FROM PAIN IS IMPORTANT TO US
You need to be able to describe your pain to your doctor or nurse.
WAYS TO DESCRIBE PAIN
PAIN SCALE of, zero to five, lets you tell the nurse how much pain you have.
FACES you can point to a face that best shows how much you are hurting.
If you are unable to talk, the nurse will watch for blood pressure changes, breathing or emotions such as tears or moaning.
