The Regional Medical Center team was named the top fundraising team of the 2009 Orangeburg County Relay For Life event and received the “Top Gun” trophy at the awards celebration held recently in Columbia.


RMC was once again the presenting sponsor of the 2009 Orangeburg County Relay For Life, held on April 24, 2009. The Orangeburg community came together for food, fun and fellowship and with one very important goal ... to raise money for the American Cancer Society at its signature Relay For Life event.

Under the leadership of team captains PeggyAnn Whitson, Kay Berry, Jean Browning, Laura Fogle and Deneene Linder, the RMC Relay For Life team raised $25,628.86, an increase of some $2,500 more than last year’s amount raised. The RMC team had bake sales, sold tickets for a quilt and sold t-shirts. Each team captain has had first-hand experience with the devastating effects of cancer either through family members, friends or patients who they have cared for over the years.

Relay For Life is an overnight event that begins on Friday night with the survivors’ lap and lasts throughout the night, ending 12 hours later. Relay teams spend the night walking the track with the thought that cancer never sleeps. The 2009 event, held on April 24 at Clark Middle School Track, raised a grand total of $164,350 for the American Cancer Society.

“The RMC Relay For Life team is awesome!” said Marnie Walls, community manager of the American Cancer Society. “They are energetic and enthusiastic, and I am always grateful that they are part of the event.”

Laura Fogle, an RMC team captain, also served as one of the event’s tri-chairs. “The Orangeburg community once again came together to support this very important cause. We had an awesome event and are already planning Relay 2010!”

The date for Relay For Life 2010 has been set for Friday, April 23. The Kick Off for the 2010 Relay For Life is scheduled for January 14, 2010 at the Prince of Orange Mall center court from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
